APÊIARA CAPOEIRA

Our School

Apêiara Capoeira brings together the traditions of Capoeira Angola and Regional through movement, music, culture and community.

Founded in Nicosia in 2010 by Mestre Casquinha, Apêiara grew from a shared passion for Capoeira and the desire to create a place where people could learn, connect and grow together.

THE MEANING BEHIND APÊIARA

Apêiara

Guide, one who knows the paths.

Guia (conhecedor dos caminhos)

Apêiara Capoeira emblem

Apêiara was born from an idea to bring capoeiristas together, creating opportunities to study, learn and explore the different paths followed by the Mestres of Capoeira.

Each Mestre carries unique knowledge, shaped by experience, tradition and a personal journey through the art. By learning from these different perspectives, we deepen our understanding of Capoeira and the ways it connects to life.

Apêiara was never intended to impose a single philosophy or way of practising Capoeira. Its purpose is to encourage curiosity, respect, learning and the exchange of knowledge.

Different paths, shared knowledge, one passion for Capoeira.

OUR STORY

After ten years living and practising Capoeira in London, Mestre Casquinha was ready for a new chapter.

The journey to Cyprus began with an email from Eleni Mouskou, known in Capoeira as Estrela. Having previously trained in London with Mestre Poncianinho, she had returned to Cyprus and was looking for a way to continue practising the art she loved.

She reached out to ask whether someone might be interested in coming to Cyprus to teach Capoeira.

At the time, Mestre Casquinha was considering a change in his own life. In February 2010, he travelled to Nicosia for ten days, during which he led five Capoeira workshops.

Those first encounters created a connection with the people and the island. The warmth, culture and welcoming atmosphere reminded him of Brazil and helped inspire his decision to begin a new chapter in Cyprus.

On 8 April 2010, Apêiara Capoeira was founded in Nicosia.

What began with an invitation and a series of workshops developed into a Capoeira community, bringing people together through movement, music, tradition and friendship.
